"I don't know what I think until I write it down."
- Joan Didion
I wish I had read that Joan Didion quote a lot sooner, because for so long, that very sentiment has been true for me.
And so, for a long time, I've kept some type of journal.
But recently, as I've found myself transitioning through a BIG life change, I've realized that journaling is what is helping me find myself again.
Does this feel familiar?
These thoughts basically sum up how I was feeling before the past year of my life.
And then, BOOM - I found myself neck-deep
in a huge life change,
and I was overwhelmed
every
single
day.
And so, I turned to my journal.
And when I say, "I turned to my journal," I mean that my journal has become a trusted friend and companion.
It's been a safe place to express my frustrations and worries, but also to ponder and dream and sort through the thoughts that sometimes pop like popcorn.
I don't think it's too much to say that my journal has helped me make it through the hardest year of my life.
All this exploration means I've taken classes and courses about journaling, and added in some of my own techniques to create a sustainable journal practice.
I JOURNAL MOST DAYS.
The way I journal is imperfect and messy.
Mistakes are allowed.
There aren't rules.
But I think that all adds up to a bit of JOURNAL MAGIC.
Allowing the process to be what it is, and change, and embracing journaling as a tool, not a boss, is what has kept me coming back to my journal regularly for the past year.
And so, I'd like to invite you to join me.
I am hosting my very first journaling class on 12 p.m. CT Wednesday, Aug. 21.
This is part one of a Wholehearted Journaling series designed to help you:
